报告摘要

In high dimensions, geometry behaves in ways that defy everyday intuition: almost all of the volume of a ball sits in a thin shell near its surface, yet the shadow of that same ball, projected onto lower-dimensional space, is a narrow Gaussian concentrated at the centre. This pair of facts — concentration of measure and the projected central limit theorem — can be derived easily, and powerful enough to run through some of the deepest questions in physics. This talk introduces the mathematics with toy models, then follows it across four fields. In cosmology, it explains how a randomly selected universe can masquerade as "intelligently designed" and leads to a prediction that at least a dozen fundamental constants remain undiscovered. In quantum foundations, it gives the exact statistics of small subsystems of random quantum states and shows that Gaussian estimates of rare events can be wrong by two orders of magnitude. It reorganises Don Page's celebrated entropy formula to separate classical from quantum correlations. Finally, it supplies a quantitative bound showing how much quantum entanglement is needed to hold two points of spacetime close together.

嘉宾简介

王志伟是英国约克大学的研究员。于2020年8月在约克大学获得博士学位,随后在莱斯布里奇大学(加拿大)、华威大学(英国)和约克大学(英国)从事博士后研究。其研究主要聚焦于黑洞物理学、量子信息和量子引力的理论工作。相关研究成果以第一作者身份发表于Nature Astronomy, Nature Communications, The Astrophysical Journal, Physical Review D.等期刊。
